A combination of my favorite community, one of my fave venues, and the film where my lore started...and I get to cosplay? Yes, please! I was so excited when I found out that the Richmond Renaissance Faire was hosting a showing of the Princess Bride at the State and National historical landmark and Richmond gem that is the Byrd Theatre.

A bit of a shorter video, but there was honestly so much cool stuff packed into only a 4 hour event, 1.5 hours of which I couldn't film, because 🏰 💫🐭

Hey, it's me, Hannah. Let's go watch The Princess Bride. Last month, I had the absolute honor and pleasure of attending a showing of The Princess Bride at the Historical Byrd Theatre in Carytown, RVA, an event held by the Richmond Renaissance Faire to raise funds and promote their inaugural ren faire, coming up on April 18th and 19th this year. Viewers are invited to show up in costume and having just finished my own Princess Buttercup cosplay last October - go check out that video if you want to see the whole process - it ended up
being essentially perfect timing, and since I'm so enthusiastic about this
Ren Faire, this movie, and the Theatre, I thought I would take you with me.

The Byrd Theatre is a 95 year old State and National Historic Landmark
located in Richmond, Virginia. The Theatre is named after William Byrd,
one of the founders of Richmond, and its opulent early 20th century appearance is preserved by the dedication
of the Byrd Theatre Foundation. I love coming here in the winter for holiday movie showings,
where carols are led by an organist before each film.

And a very very special thank you to the Byrd Theatre for hosting Richmond screening of Princess Bride. Thank you Byrd Theatre!

As everyone found their seats,
the event was kicked off with a welcome message from founder
and artistic director of both Virago Alley and Richmond Renaissance Faire,
Amanda Robinson.

Before we go any further,
I want to tell you about Virago Alley. Our mission is to provide an accessible
and inclusive platform for the exploration, education, and preservation
of historical martial arts and artisan trades. This is the largest collaboration
of local artists and makers I've ever had the pleasure of working with, being a part of Richmond.

With over 750 people behind the scenes
working to bring this event to life. It takes a village and Richmond has shown
up in a way that continues to amaze me. It is a testament to the need for this event, for a true
community celebration, and for something that empowers all of us and offers a
mode of escape and creative connection. Thank you.

Hey Guys, thank you for coming out today. So I just wanted to share a little bit of our backstory
and our narratives for the faire. You may have heard some of this online,
but we wanted to kind of open it up a little bit further
for you guys today.

So the Richmond Ren Faire tells the story of the Regathering, where artisans, makers and traders rise up to reclaim the spirit of creation
as an act of resilience and an era of disconnection
in an increasingly automated society. And while most of what you will experience
with this will be similar to other renaissance faires we are trying to do things
a little bit differently. Something that is truly representative
of our gritty DIY punk art scene here in Richmond. Here you will find no crowns,
no corporations, no...

I can't believe I cut off here,
but apparently I had to stop recording
because of my need to join the crowd
in cheering at No Kings.
My sincerest apologies to you and to Ash,
but a quick reminder

And before we get to everyone's
favorite part of the event, the sword demonstrations, let me shout out the sword
raffle from local knife makers, Join or die knives. Don't worry,

just right here in Richmond, and we're going to be raffling this off
for a giveaway at the main Dorey Park. It has is a rapier style sword, and Wesley
wields it sort of like a side sword before the,,,

Devil's need a little love too 💕 To celebrate Valentine's Day this year, I decided to take a few pieces I needed to finalize for an upcoming cosplay project (namely, a tiefling tail that I was repurposing for a devil character), and do a little photoshoot in the snow with my friend Lexi. I had a blast and I hope you do too!

Hey, it's me, Hannah, and today we're chasing tail. Sorry. I mean, we're making a tail, specifically a devil tail. Hence, we seem to be bad jokes. I'm sorry. Let me start over. I need to make a tail for an upcoming cosplay. But there's no way in hell. Do you get it? That I'll have the whole cosplay done in time for this video? But I thought it would be fun to use it to make a little Valentine's Day devil costume to celebrate love and commercialism or whatever. Now I have watched a few tutorials, specifically one from Alena Frost here on YouTube, and I think I can adapt that pretty easily to use the supplies I already have lying around the house to achieve the looks that I'm going for.

I'm planning to use some three millimeter, I believe Eva foam, some Eva foam craft dowels, some three millimeter eight gauge wire, some contact cement, and some PPE for when I'm using the contact cement, some leftover poly film and some pink spandex, which I'm taking from a second bodysuit that I bought to perfectly match the first bodysuit that I'm using for the cosplay. The first thing I need to do is glue these two dowels together and figure out how long I want this tail to be.

After applying the contact cement to one of the ends of both foam rods, I waited patiently for it to cure before making the dowels kiss each other. I knew I was going to cover this part, so I decided to go ahead and reinforce the connection point with electrical tape before checking the length of the mirror.

Once I was happy with it, I cut partway through the dowel foam just enough to be able to stick some wire in there. And I tried to glue this back up, but it was not complying, so I just came back through with some electrical tape and we were right as rain. Again, this is getting covered. So I wasn't that pressed about perfection here.

Okay, so now is the point where I'm starting to deviate a little bit from Alana's original tutorial, which calls for some thicker upholstery film, which I don't have, but what I do have is Eva foam, and I think it's the same thickness that the upholstery foam is supposed to be, so I'm hoping that I can make this work.

It'll definitely be less flexible, but I'm hoping that that will be a benefit and will make it stronger versus too stiff and like, unnatural. I'm also thinking that because it's Eva foam, I'll be able to cut the edges at a 45 degree angle to make them meet and almost create a little bit of a ridge, which I'm hoping will feel a touch more skeletal and therefore actually feel a little bit more like a biological feature of my of my character. Hopefully that makes sense and hopefully it'll work. I suppose there's really only one way to find out. Let's get to cutting.

It did, in fact, take until I glued the pieces together to realize that the ridge that I had hoped to achieve by cutting out a 45 degree angle was actually on the bottom of the tail, but oh well, let's keep pushing forward.

Alrighty, so I have my tail and I also have the tip of my tail. And I was thinking once I attach these two together, we'd be pretty much ready to add the final layer, which is repurposing this bodysuit to essentially make a sleeve to wrap around this piece. However, because this is brown and this is white, that color variation is going to show through the translucent fabric.

So I could just paint this white. That would probably be the easiest. But paint takes time to dry and it's foam. So you never know how well it's going to take and how many layers I'm going to need. And I also don't feel like it. But what I do have is a bunch of this leftover quilting batting that is not thick enough to be the original layer, but could add a nice little bit of texture to the layer that ends up being right underneath the spandex material.

So I'm kind of thinking that's what I'm going to do is just put one, one more layer before the spandex, get these to at least be a little bit closer in color as an under layer. And I don't have to paint anything. I just get to go ahead and break out my sewing machine, which I have been itching to do.

So I'm going to go ahead and just use these as pattern pieces to decide how much of the batting I need, and in what shape. I still need to attach these two pieces together too, so I'll go ahead and do that, and then we'll see where we can go...

Hey, it's me. Hannah. We have an unprecedented storm coming this weekend. Yet rather than stocking up on groceries or even checking to see if we own a snow shovel, I think we do. We must. The only thing I seem to be motivated to do is to say, to hell with ice. Now, I love snow, but ice is just something I cannot stand for.

It terrorizes our community. It causes utter mayhem. It's dangerous and it's cold. But a local grassroots community art space, studio two three, is also looking to support the eradication of ice from our community. And they recently released this design as a fundraiser for the Richmond Legal Fund. They're selling prints and t shirts and these banners, which are very Renaissance fair coated, the proceeds of which are all going to this nonprofit legal collaborative created to connect community members with legal resources.

I'm happy to say that at the time of recording, they've already reached their goal of over $5,000 in donations. But if you like this design and you want to go check it out and also be a supportive member of the Richmond community or from somewhere else, feel free to go check it out. Or let me encourage you to try to find some similar organizations within your own community.

If you're not a Richmond local. Now, this is already an amazing cause. But I am here today selfishly, because while they were announcing this fundraiser, they also posted this concept for their print. And with the inaugural Richmond Renaissance Fair coming up, I need to recreate this. So today I am going to make a tabard and we're going to take it to studio two three and have them screen printed for me and whatever earnings I can make off of this video as a YouTuber are also going to go to the Richmond Legal Fund.

So I'll go ahead and ask earlier than usual for likes and comments and even shares so that we can build up a good amount to donate. Thank you in advance. Now let's figure out how to make a tabard.

I luckily had this partially pressured fabric left to my stash, plenty of which was not Shirred, which was the perfect light oatmeal color for screen printing and for matching the original inspiration photo. I also had the perfect amount for the tabard, plus some possibly enough leftover to create a cape of some sort, which was part of the original concept, but that I won't be finishing in time for the community board meeting.

Okay, so the snow is here, making today a perfect day to do some crafts and get creative as a form of resistance. But escapism is not our only tool. Later this week, there is a community meeting that I plan to attend with some friends to make our voices heard on the plans for the creation of a detainment center right here in our community.

But before that, studio two three actually went ahead and scheduled their printing day, where they invite people to come with a blank canvas, a t shirt or a tabard in my case, and we can get the prints added to our pieces and have something to wear to these community meetings. So now that's the plan, and I would love to style this up and maybe even do a little photoshoot in the South.

Shine Your Light 🌞 To Hell with 🧊 -- making a Medieval Tabard, fit for a community board meeting 😏

I don't know what to tell you. I simply couldn't let this idea go, and now I have my new favorite home decor item - a disco sword. This was my first time working with mirror tiles, in order to disco-ify something. And in this video, I even learn how to cut glass in order to custom fit some tiles for an even better application (sort of...an attempt was made). Let me know what you think!

Disco sword. I am between a few big cosplay projects right now and my brain is mush. So when I saw a video of someone covering a random household object in mirror tiles in order to make some decor out of it, and I thought about my own home decor choices and what I could cover in tiny little mirrors. Well, it just clicked and I haven't been able to think about anything else.
So today we're making a disco sword. Now, I decided I didn't want to use one of my real swords for the base of this project. So yesterday I went out and shopped around for many hours just seeking some sort of toy or foam sword that I could use as a base. I did finally find one. I really like the shape of this in terms of just being sort of a generic sword shape.
I was specifically looking for one that had an even shape up through the blade, so that I would have a better chance of evenly spacing my mirror tiles, and I was also looking for one with a hilt that had a more generic shape. Surprisingly are designed. Nobody wants to sell toy swords anymore, but bonus feature. This lights up.
I also picked up 6000 mirror tiles, so if this isn't enough.
I might go ahead and give up. So I am in fact resisting every urge to just jump straight into this. Instead, I want to try and map it out a little bit. I feel like whenever I do come across somebody trying to disqualify a random object, there is often a spot or two that feels like there's some weird overlap with the mirrors or the tiles aren't matching up right.
And since this isn't just a basic round object like a disco ball, I do think I need to be kind of careful. Or at least a little thoughtful. We'll see how long I hang on to that mindset. Hello, darkness, my old friend.
These mirror tiles are peel and stick, and I think the adhesive actually works pretty well. If I wanted it to be a bit more heavy duty, I would probably jump up to E6000 or something similar. But since this is working, I'll go ahead and save the effort here. I also found that working in rectangular clusters helped keep things more evenly spaced, while also being easier and quicker to work with.
Okay, we are off to a great start here. I am technically a little off center here towards the hilt and also a little bit at the point, but I don't know how much I can do about that at this stage. So I am going to kind of just push forward. I did almost immediately give up on my plans of planning.
This came together super quick, just because I was able to use bigger like chunks of the tiled sheets, which I think helps like keep things relatively even almost to a fault, because then we get to the points where we find the breaks in between the sheets and they don't match up as perfectly. So we're getting to the point already where I need to start using smaller sections and potentially even like just one by one squares.
And this is, of course, where things are going to slow down. I feel like I've made such great progress already. I am definitely nervous about actually like rounding this corner to the side of the blade, and I don't really have a strategy other than just kind of go forth and conquer and just sort of see what works. So wish me luck on that.
I'm also already extremely nervous about the hilt. I feel like this is where I'm going to need a great deal of brainpower, and I don't have a lot of it right now. It is really pretty though. It is just scratching that itch in my brain.
But I am glad I decided to do this on the foam version of a sword, because if I get to a section that isn't perfectly flat to line up with the back of the mirror tile, I can just press it down to get more area in contact with the adhesive, if that makes sense. Like if I did a regular, less pliable sword, it might have adhesive that is just open to the world and to capture all of the cat hair that is just floating around this house.
Fellow cat owners, you know what I'm talking about.
This is the best idea I've ever had. I'm definitely facing issues with, like, gaps forming in between some of the tiles. I think I'm going to try and get my hands on some glass cutting tools and see if I can make some, like, custom shape tiles to to fill in those gaps. It's pretty prevalent in the point of the sword.
We'll need to clean that up a...

This whimsical, celestial wizard robe might be one of the best things I've ever crocheted out of granny squares - it's sooooo cozy and comfy and I've only taken it off since finishing it because I got slightly too warm. And when I'm done wearing it, the cats LOVE kneading it. WELCOME TO THE BISCUIT FACTORY!

Look. What are we even doing here? If we are claiming to be making a series on fantasy crochet and knitwear? But we haven't even started working on a wizard robe made of celestial inspired granny squares. What's that? Oh, it's what we're doing today. Well, perfect. Okay, here's the plan. It is already getting warm in here. I'm going to be creating large granny squares in different designs using an eight millimeter hook.
And both Bernat blanket and sweet snuggles light from loops and threads. I'm going to use various shades of blues, purples, whites and yellows because that's what feels most wizard core to me. And when I say wizard, I am specifically thinking more like Merlin from sword in the Stone or better yet, the sorcerer from Fantasia. What is his name?
Yarn said apparently my lack of Kingdom Hearts experience is showing. So yeah, very magical and very say it with me. Whimsical. But yeah, since we're using the heavier blanket yarn, these squares are going to work up pretty big pretty quickly. But that just means we get to make fewer squares. I have been gathering tutorials and videos on how to make different granny square patterns with different mystical motifs, and I have a few variations of like star, moon, sun, and magical swirl patterns that I'm excited to share with you.
And I may not get too deep into any specific pattern as a tutorial, but I will link to my resources in the description and of course, share with you any variations or alterations to patterns that I'm going to make. I'm starting off with a set of Celestial Granny squares from Craft Folk here on YouTube, which includes a sun, a moon, a four point star, and a five point star.
Since this is a nice full set that already fits together so well, this is going to be the perfect place to start. Cue the time lapse.
These pattern tutorials were great. This yarn makes it a bit tricky to keep track of some of the stitches, but I think I did okay just following my heart. I definitely got the hang of things the more I practiced, which is so frustratingly just the way it goes with crochet and probably most things in life. Some of these first squares are simultaneously my favorites due to the color choices, but also big contenders for the back of the robe.
Just because they aren't as good as my last few. You'll see what I mean.
I fear that I may have not really gotten the hang of adding the points of the different stars until quite near the end, again, because the blanket weight yarn was a bit tougher to navigate, but in the end I did get there. You can still tell what each motif is, and I suppose that's all that really matters.
All right, so I've got these four motifs complete and I'm very happy with them. So much so that I've put in some time and actually got, well, at least the beginnings of the back of the robe complete as far as the granny squares go. This will be the body of the robe, and I think I do want to go ahead and add an extra row of granny squares too.
And then we have the beginnings of the sleeves. And that was will definitely need at least one more on either side, if not too. But we'll start with five more squares, and that should get us to probably pretty close to being done with the back of the robe. I love how plush and fuzzy this yarn is, and I seriously cannot wait to cozy up in a giant wizard robe.
This might be the best idea I've ever had.

Hey, it's me, Hannah.
Welcome to another chapter of my so-far unnamed series in which I create fantasy inspired crochet and knitwear. In this series, my goal is to let my unyielding compulsion to crochet myself through the daylight saving season run rampant. As I continue my pursuit of bringing whimsy to my every day. Thanks for being here. For the past week or so, I have been scouring the internet for the best jester esque hat patterns that kind of walk that very fine line of whimsy and wearability.
And while some of the more aggressively clown core hats that I've seen are absolute stunning pieces of art, I just know that I wouldn't wear them. So I wanted to find some patterns that would still be worth my time and effort in terms of making them, i.e. I'll wear them later while still scratching that harlequin itch. And here's what I found.
The first crochet hat design that I am trying to tackle here is super simple, yet certainly statement enough piece to possibly meet my requirements for the balance that I'm trying to strike here. And that is a single hexagon jester hat. This gives me the same energy that a cat ear beanie does, in that you take a very simple shape, you sew up the sides and voila, you have the very cute, quirky cap.
Now this should be just as easy because you create one hexagon using granny stitches, and then just fold it over to get that jester hat shape. I'll link to some of my favorite inspo pics from Etsy and other video tutorials that I found out in the description, but having just finished my first hexagon sweater, I feel I am more than well enough equipped to just wing it.
Now, I think color choice is going to be pretty important here, and I had originally love the idea of just doing this in like a green and white stripe. Green and white are very wearable colors for me, but while I was at the store for something else entirely, I accidentally walked into the orange section and accidentally picked up this Karen cakes in the color pistachio.
And now I don't have to worry about switching colors throughout. That's going to save me. Like minutes of time.
Let's get started. Okay, so even though there are infinite videos and free patterns out there on how to do a granny hexagon, let me show you how I'm tackling this. We'll keep things easy and skip the magic circle and rather get your hook set up with a slip knot. And then we'll chain for.
Well, slip stitch into that first chain and look at that. We have ourselves a circle. Now that we've got our circle, let's chain three.
Then do two double crochets into the circle.
This is our first cluster of granny stitches. So we're going to chain two and then double crochet three times to create another cluster all into the the center circle.
As you can see, I am crocheting over the tail just because that makes it easier to do one kind of tug on the on the tail a little bit to close that circle. And even more importantly, now I won't have to worry about weaving in the ends once I'm done. Okay, so we've created our second cluster. We're going to do that same process, the chain two and three granny stitches into the circle until we have six clusters.
As it starts to get more crowded in here. You can just kind of tug on the first chain three to give yourself a little more space in that circle.
All right. We are up to six clusters. So we are going to do one more chain two. And then we are going to slip stitch into the top of that original chain three. I am so excited to share this tutorial on how I made a 70s-inspired Medieval Revival styled mini sweater dress on my circular knitting machine. Teaching myself (and then you) how to do the square tabs on the knitting machine was a JOURNEY, but I'm so happy with the outcome, and I can't wait to make a matching cropped sweater too.

Hey, it's me, Hannah.
We are at the point in the year where I am compelled by every force in nature to pick up my crochet hook. Break out my yarn stash and hyper fixate on fiber arts. I don't really consider myself a crochet specific YouTuber and definitely not a knitting YouTuber. My typical day to day fixations for the rest of the year tend to revolve around the Renaissance fair, or just finding ways to add a little bit of whimsy to my everyday life.

But in this video, I want to bring that whimsy into my cozy winter crafting by attempting to design some knitwear slash crochet wear that fits that fantasy core vibe. And if I'm still feeling compelled, I may try and turn this into a series. So if that's something you might be interested in, feel free to subscribe. Let's walk through the plan.

The first design that I wanted to explore was a sort of melding of a medieval esque tabard with a 70s Renaissance Revival style dress to create a sort of medieval knit piece that I wanted to make in both a sweater and in a mini dress variety. The key features that I'm looking to establish here are the large red and white two tone panels with the castle inspired tabs at the bottom.
Now, because this is a bigger piece and I want to get it done more quickly in order to get this video out on time, I want to try and pattern this out on my centered knitting machine. I think the first thing I need to figure out is how I'm going to add those tabs to the bottom of the dress, no matter what, I'm going to be working in the panel setting on the machine for the body of the dress anyway, and my plan is to create four panels, two for the front and two for the back.
Now, I've been playing around with how I can achieve these very geometric shapes at the bottom, and I think it makes sense for us to build these panels from the bottom up based on swatching and what I know of the machine. I think that it makes sense for my panels to be 36 stitches wide. I honestly didn't explain this well, so let me give you a better visual of the actual plan here for the first panel.
We are going to start with an even number of rows of waste yarn, which helps us cast the actual project on cleanly. Then we are going to begin our first gap using more waste yarn, which will be two stitches wide, the corner of which will be connected to a back panel to create a gap at the side seam.
Next, we'll start our first tab in our project yarn, which will be ten stitches wide. Then another gap in waste yarn. This time four stitches wide. Then repeat for one more ten stitch tab and one more for stitch gap. And then we have our final half of a tab which will connect to the other front panel. To make a full tab at the center front seam, I've made this six stitches wide to account for the seam allowance when I connect it to the other front panel.
We're going to repeat this pattern of waste yarn and project yarn for ten rows before we take just our project yarn and build up for another 125 rows. Now, I've obviously just walked you through this process, taking only my sizing into account, but you can take these same principles and adjust them for yourself if you aren't perfectly Hannah sized.
It's easy enough to create a gauge swatch on the machine and then based on the gauge measurements and your measurements, or even better, the measurements of an existing garment that you like to wear. Decide how many panels you need to make for the front and back, along with the length of your sweater. Now you need to do some math to determine the dimensions of the crenelated inspired tabs at the bottom.
This will be based on how many stitches you have in each panel, and how those panels fit together, and may vary from tab to tab. I found it helpful to use a spreadsheet to determine the width of each tab and each space. Now that we've got all of that out of the way, let me ...

Hey, it's me. Hannah. Let the crochet floodgates open. I have been sick the last couple of weeks. Like, really sick. Like stuck in bed sick. So I haven't been doing much of anything except for crochet and daydreaming about future crochet projects. My algorithms on all of the platforms know this. Pinterest. TikTok, YouTube. It's it's all been poppin with inspiration.
So I've been working to put together my crochet project wishlist and I thought I would share that with you today. I'll put a link to the board where I've compiled all of these patterns. In case you too want to tackle any of these projects yourself. So let's get started. I'm not primarily a crochet creator or a fiber arts creator, but all of the fiber arts YouTubers that I follow always tell you to grab a cozy beverage and a work in progress and sit back and relax.
So I suppose I'll tell you to do the same. Or not. I'm not the boss of you. Let's kick it off with accessories. If you're reading ahead, you might be asking yourself, why does one need four different styles of fingerless gloves and mittens? And that's a valid question. But for one, I have cold hands. But I am also just very intrigued by all of the technical aspects of each of these projects.
So the first one is a granny square fingerless glove from the disco loop. I think that this would be the quickest and easiest way to sort of rip through a project and get something onto my cold fingers or, well, I guess palms, not fingers. But yeah, I think I could get through these pretty quickly. Plus, they're just so cute.
I would definitely have to pick out the right colors. I love that these colors sort of highlight the vintage quality of the granny square. Okay, so I'm hopefully going to get through those relatively quickly and maybe even stash bust a little with those too. Also, if I'm looking down a lot, it's because I'm looking at my board as we go through this again.
That will be linked in the description below. Next, I want to get some fuller coverage with the crochet cable mittens from Stitch Barre. Now don't get me wrong, I love the way that crochet looks, but I also do really love when crochet sort of resembles knit. And cables definitely do that in my opinion. I haven't ever done anything with a raised texture like this, but I know how.
Or I at least understand the fundamentals of like a front post stitch at a back post stitch. And if I need help, the free written pattern has some like good visuals to go along with it, so I should be okay. This would also require like the right yarn to achieve this look. I think that's my biggest weakness when it comes to crochet is choosing the right yarn.
So once I've stash busted enough, I definitely want to start exploring like better yarns for my projects. All right, so on to the next set of mittens. So next we have the Fair Isle crochet mittens from Be Hooked. And let me start by saying I am a mittens girlie through and through. In another life I used to be a freestyle snowboarder, so gear for staying warm is something that I know a thing or two about.
Mittens. Keep your hands warmer than gloves do. It's just a fact. So that's why we're looking at mittens here. Plus, I think that's easier to crochet than gloves. These mittens look pretty easy to whip up, but they have a little bit of that Fair Isle inspired color work like throughout, which is such a small but quaint sort of Scandinavian-esque detail.
And I think it really elevates the piece. I don't know, I'm excited to give it a go. I do think I can be a little more lenient with the color choices here too. So another one to add to the stash busting list and the last gloves I have on here are the Stella fingerless gloves, which have the coolest star stitches.
Something I've never tried before but I'm super excited to learn. These are also part of a set which includes a hat and a scarf, so that could be a good gift for someone like we're approaching the holiday season, but could just also be a good gift to myself. All right, so bonnets seem like they're still super trendy in the fiber arts community, probably because they're more unique than just a scarf or a hat, but they are still relatively easy to do compared to...
